About the Susan
Floral design started for me as a little girl pinning flowers to my great grandmothers blouse and picking flowers from my mothers gardens to fill May Baskets. It expanded to prom corsages, bouquets and cake flowers for friends weddings and decorating reception halls for special holidays and celebrations. Living in the country myself, gardening and growing flowers to share with my own community of neighbors and friends has always been part of what makes me happy. Many people look forward to late July and August when I share from the bounty of Gladiolus my mother and I grow. I asked mom the other day how many dozens of Glads she and dad gave away to those driving by this summer and she said "172 dozen"! Such a beautiful gift, freely given to others out of her labor of love.
A couple years ago I saw an ad for a designer position at a local shop close to where I live so I applied and was hired. The experience fueled my passion for working with flowers and before long, I knew this was something I wanted to do as a business for myself. I am currently finishing my course work with Floral Design Institute which is furthering my knowledge and skills plus helping me to stay current on trends and fashions in the industry. The Business of Flowers -and interview of Susan by Kimberly Burnham
A fascinating mix of toe reading (the first time I learned about it), feng shui and of course, flowers ... the meaning and energy of certain flowers and the influence of the number of flowers in a bouquet. I learned a lot at last week's Empowering Business Women of Greater Spokane, when I had the pleasure of hearing Spokane flower designer, Susan Hines. I have also been enjoying the bouquet of flowers I won in the month draw at EBW. Thank you for your generosity, Susan Hines! Today Susan shares her vision of flowers for businesses, events and individuals and how to get the greatest value and energy for your design dollar. She can also be messaged on LinkedIn Q: What has prompted you to open your own floral business here in the Spokane area? Honestly Kim, I have to say it largely has happened do to having a husband who saw how happy I was working with flowers and sharing them with others that he not only encouraged me to step into my dream of having my own floral business, but he made it possible by building me a walk in cooler and giving up part of his shop to create a work area for me to create arrangements in. My Personal Touch Florals is a home based business where I design flowers and deliver them throughout the Spokane West Plains area, into the City of Spokane and Cheney, Four Lakes, Medical Lake, Airway Heights and Reardan areas. By not having a store front at this time it allows me more time to be able to garden, pursue my arts and crafts along with continuing to work with clients in my Feng Shui Consulting business and design personalized fresh and silk flowers.
